DETROIT LAKES, Minn. — Former State Senator Nicole Mitchell will serve a six-month jail sentence for burglarizing her stepmother's home in April of 2024.

Becker County District Court Judge Michael Fritz handed down the sentence Tuesday morning, ruling against a request from Mitchell's defense team to stay the sentence while she appeals her conviction. He sentenced her to 21 months in state prison but then stayed that sentence, placing Mitchell on 5 years of supervised probation. If she violates a list of conditions - which includes remaining law-abiding, providing a DNA sample, and not possessing firearms - she could be forced to serve 21 months behind bars in a Minnesota state correctional facility.
