RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Some bugs are pollinators, making the world go round by helping plants grow. Others are dangerous, species that can decimate everything from gardens to crops. However, the North Carolina Department of Agriculture has a fearsome fighting force dedicated to finding these invaders.
Spotted Lanternflies are invasive insects with the potential to cause major economic damage. They can ruin vineyards, take over garden plants, and fill yards with sooty mold.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the bug has now been found in 19 states and is spreading in North Carolina, but the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has a team dedicated to find and destroy the spotted lanternfly.
