ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. (WTVD) -- City of Rocky Mount has uncovered a serious financial crisis through a recent budget review .

According to City Manager Elton Daniels, a review revealed that for over two years the city has spent millions more each month than it received.

"These findings are troubling, and the city is hiring an independent forensic accounting firm to further investigate," Daniels said.

In 2023, city council members Andre Knight and Reuben C. Blackwell IV were suspicious about city management and voiced their concerns publicly.

By August 2024, the majority of the city council voted to place the city manager on administrative leave, though no fiscal changes were initiated until Manager Daniels' team discovered the deficit.
