WILLISTON, ND (KXNET) — After balancing a deficit of $16 million, Williston City Commissioners have officially approved the city's 2026 budget.

However, cuts and decisions had to be made to get there.

Commissioners are planning to eliminate the currently vacant positions within the city to help close the gap, but no one who is currently employed will be laid off.

Cuts are also coming from the police, fire, and ambulance departments, though leaders say critical public safety services won't suffer.

Homeowners will see a 3% property tax increase, as well as a 5% rise in water and sewer rates, and an increase in solid waste fees. More than $12 million is earmarked for city infrastructure.
