A maintenance worker at the Avondale Head Start on Ocoee Street called 911 early Thursday morning to report that fire alarms were sounding at the school.

Chattanooga firefighters were dispatched about 6:27am to the school, and were able to navigate through the smoke to quickly find and extinguish the fire on the second floor.

The school's ventilation system was able to help remove the smoke from the building.

CFD investigators determined the fire to be accidental, caused by a small refrigerator in a large office.

There were no injuries. CFD said the fire was contained to the office of origin, but there was smoke and water damage in the hallway.
