When remnants of Hurricane Helene hit North Carolina one year ago, western North Carolina took the brunt of the storm. While Iredell County avoided much more than a few downed power lines and trees, the western portion of the state saw homes, bridges, roads and portions of Interstate 40 washed away in the downpour.
Help was needed.
“The roads were completely taken down to bedrock. Train tracks were twisted like fricking DNA helices. There was really no way to get them in,” Joel Amick said. He is now the managing director of United Carolinas Cavalry, a nonprofit that brought aid to those in need.
