A man has died and seven others have received treatment following a suspected carbon monoxide poisoning incident at a takeaway in Walsall. West Midlands Police reported that officers were called to the establishment on Cresswell Crescent, Bloxwich, at approximately 9.40pm on Friday due to concerns for the welfare of a man in his 50s, who was later confirmed dead at the scene.

Emergency services evacuated nearby properties, allowing residents to return in the early hours of Saturday after safety tests were conducted. A police spokesperson expressed condolences, stating, "Our thoughts are with (the man’s) loved ones at this devastating time."

Seven individuals, including emergency service workers, were treated for suspected carbon monoxide poisoning. Some of these individuals were subsequently taken to hospital for further evaluation.

Local councillor Michael Coulson provided updates on social media, indicating that the incident occurred at a food takeaway within the Mossley shops. He noted that the fire service was called to assist an injured person but faced difficulties accessing the property due to a generator that was "releasing a mixture of gases."

Coulson visited the scene and shared his thoughts, saying, "It’s so incredibly tragic what has happened." He confirmed that after safety tests were completed, residents were allowed back into their homes around 3am, and the shops reopened the following morning. He also acknowledged the small police presence that remained in the area, thanking them for their support.

West Midlands Police stated, "We will work with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to help establish the full circumstances" surrounding the incident. The investigation is ongoing as authorities seek to determine the cause of the suspected carbon monoxide poisoning.
