Local police confirmed that the shooter is down and there is no ongoing threat to the public. The incident took place at the church located on McCandlish Road, approximately 50 miles north of Detroit. Authorities reported that the church is currently on fire. Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson stated that the area has been evacuated and both local and federal law enforcement are on the scene. “The entire church is on fire,” Swanson said, describing the situation as a “dynamic scene.” He added that more information would be released as it becomes available. As of now, police have not disclosed the conditions of the victims. A reunification site for those affected has been established at the Trillium Theater. Governor Gretchen Whitmer expressed her condolences, stating, “Violence anywhere, especially in a place of worship, is unacceptable.” This shooting occurred just a day after the death of Russell M. Nelson, the oldest president of the Church, who passed away at the age of 101. Dallin H. Oaks, the current longest-serving apostle, is expected to succeed him as the next president of the church.
