AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - A Richmond County deputy is recovering after being shot multiple times during an officer-involved shooting on Washington Road — making this the third deputy injured in a shooting this year.

The sheriff’s office says around 12:38 a.m. Thursday, deputies responded to a robbery, where the complainant said he was robbed at gunpoint at the BP gas station on Washington Road.

Upon arrival in the area, deputies encountered 20-year-old Dalyn Dewayne Elder, of Augusta, who immediately fled on foot.

During a pursuit, Elder opened fire on a deputy near the Waffle House, 2951 Washington Road.

Sheriff’s Deputy Victor Rodriguez was struck multiple times in the torso but returned fire, according to the sheriff’s office.
