SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - SMART Reading is seeking community volunteers to help boost children's literacy in Oregon. The nonprofit is calling for residents to dedicate just one hour weekly to read with local students during the 2025-26 school year.
Since 1992, SMART Reading has supported more than 334,000 children in Oregon. This year, the organization aims to serve 1,288 students and distribute over 18,000 books in Benton, Lane, and Linn counties.
“Our volunteers are the heart of our work,” Elissa Kobrin, SMART Reading Area Director, said. “Reading with a child for just one hour a week can ignite confidence, curiosity, and a lifelong love of learning.”
