The synagogue terrorist was being investigated over an alleged rape when he carried out the attack , sources have confirmed.

Jihad Al-Shamie was on police bail over the alleged sexual attack, which is reported to have taken place earlier this year. The Guardian reports the 35-year-old was also believed to have other criminal convictions for lesser offences, but was not on the radar of counter-terrorism officers.

Al-Shamie, a British citizen of Syrian descent, was shot dead by armed police outside Heaton Park synagogue in Crumpsall yesterday morning after killing one man and seriously injuring a number of others. Two men, Adrian Daulby , 53, and Melvin Cravitz, 66, died during the attack. Mr Daulby was killed by a bullet fired at Shamie by police marksmen.
