MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — A herd of paddlers is making its way down to a finish line in Fort Morgan.
Considered to be one of the most difficult endurance paddles in the world, the 650-mile race begins in North Alabama and hits several checkpoints along Alabama's waterways before ending in Fort Morgan.
The 7th Great Alabama 650 Race, hosted by the Alabama Scenic River Trail, kicked off on Oct. 4 at the Weiss Lake Boat Ramp with 19 single and double paddlers.
Paddlers from Germany to Texas come to compete in a race that stretches from lower Appalachia to the Gulf of Mexico. In order to compete, participants had to take part in a qualifying race prior to Aug. 15.
Currently in first place is a duo from Alabama, Bobby Johnson and Matt Taylor. They are currently making their way to checkpoint #3
