PORTLAND, Conn. (WTNH) — Portland High School and Portland Middle School will reopen Thursday following a sewage issue, the district announced Wednesday.

A "significant" sewage backup happened Tuesday on the first floor of the high school, prompting an early dismissal and schools being closed on Wednesday.

All students between 7th and 12th grades were dismissed around noon on Tuesday due to unsanitary conditions and an odor that affected both buildings, according to officials.

The district said the sewage issue has been resolved, and all schools will return to normal schedules Thursday.
