AKRON, Ohio — Akron police say a 24-year-old woman was unintentionally shot in the abdomen early Sunday while walking to her car outside of the Empire Lounge.

“According to witnesses, a large group of people were involved in an altercation in the parking lot,” according to Akron police. “As the victim walked toward her car, shots were fired and she was unintentionally struck.”

When officers responded to the scene around 2:30 a.m. in the 1800 block of Merriman Road, they provided emergency medical aid until paramedics arrived.

The woman was then taken to a local hospital. Police say her injuries are not life-threatening.

“Detectives recovered multiple shell casings from the parking lot and determined that at least two vehicles had also been struck by gunfire,” according to police.
