BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - If you’re on the hunt for treats and tricks, you’re in for a fright at the cash register.

At the University Mall’s Spirit Halloween, two-year-old Wyatt Trayah has his heart set on a Buzz Lightyear costume.

His mom, Annabelle, was not so enamored.

“I was really surprised that it was $40 for a toddler costume,” she said.

She didn’t pay nearly as much last Halloween when Wyatt went as a skunk.

“We’ll make it work, but I feel like $40 for a toddler costume is kind of higher than I remember last year being,” said Trayah.

Trayah is right on the money.

The National Retail Federation estimates Americans will spend a record $13.1 billion on Halloween goods this year.

Things like candy and costumes, produced overseas, are marked up due to tariffs.
