PORTLAND, Ore. — Thousands of kids across Oregon are eating local when they step into the cafeteria for lunch, and it's all thanks to a state program and hundreds of local producers.

The Oregon Department of Agriculture's Farm to School program is the focus of this month's "Fresh From Oregon" series.

“Here we have masa. Masa is cornmeal and it's mixed with chilies,” said Lucy De León as she showed off the work being done in her kitchen at Salsas Locas in Southeast Portland.

The workers were busy, whipping up fresh food for local students.

“For schools we focus on tamales. We also do enchiladas. We do burritos,” said De León.

She runs the business, and says that in 2018, Portland Public Schools approached her at a food show. She said the district became her first customer in the F
