Chattanooga Police Chief John Chambers will ask the City Council Tuesday for approval to apply for and if selected, accept a grant for a new K9 .
The $15,000 grant would come from the Stanton K9 Foundation, which honors K9s lost in the line of duty. The grant would support a new K9 and training, along with a bullet-proof vest.
This comes after the loss of K9 Diesel in the line of duty in September. Police deployed K9 Diesel when responding to a SWAT standoff, and he suffered injuries to his hind legs after walking through broken glass. The injuries left the three-year-old German Shepherd with a diminished quality of life, and two days later, veterinarians humanely euthanized Diesel.
