The Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has responded to calls from the public to build more driving test centres in the UK as a method to tackle the record backlog .

Over the summer, a spokesperson for AA Driving School said the situation around driving tests "cannot get much worse".

In August, the average waiting time across all test centres reached 22 weeks, up from 14 weeks in February 2024 .

Earlier this year, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander told the Commons’ Transport Select Committee that her department "inherited an enormous backlog" but was "acting fast" to tackle the issue, with at least 10,000 extra tests to be available each month.
