DUBUQUE, Iowa (KCRG) - If the government doesn’t reopen by November 1, more than 130,000 Iowa households stand to lose their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits .

As a result, Resources Unite, a nonprofit in Dubuque has seen a 40% spike in people needing food.

“What we’re seeing is people are coming into our office and other food pantries and they’re stocking up,” Josh Jasper, Resources Unite’s president and CEO said. “They have the mindset that they’re not going to get any benefits in November and they’re fearful,” he said.

While Resources Unite can help meet some needs, Jasper said it won’t have enough food to help its clients make it through the month if they’re not getting SNAP benefits.
