It’s not just visible fat that can impact your heart’s health.
A new study out of McMaster University found that “skinny fat” hidden between your organs may also be damaging your arteries — though researchers say this type of fat can be lost through exercise and eating habits.
Looking at the MRI results of more than 33,000 Canadians and U.K. residents, researchers found that a higher amount of visceral fat — the fat that is stored around organs in your abdomen — is associated with narrower arteries. This means it’s harder for your blood to bring oxygen and other nutrients to parts of the body, which could increase the risk of a stroke or heart attack.
The researchers also looked at levels of fat in the liver, and found a weaker but still notable connection with clogged arteries.
