As a candidate for the Orange County Legislature, I took part in the “Week Without Driving” challenge to see firsthand what life is like in our county without a car. I only made it one day. By 9:00 a.m.

I had already seen how much our economy and quality of life depend on automobiles and how little we have invested in real alternatives. If I wanted to take public transportation to work in Washingtonville, I would need to go into New York City first and then catch another bus back. Instead of a direct trip, our current system makes something as basic as getting to work nearly impossible. After work,
