Residents across Newark and the North Jersey region woke up to a brisk and chilly morning Tuesday, with temperatures reminding commuters to grab a jacket before heading to the bus stop at Market Street and University Avenue.

Skies began mostly clear but are expected to give way to increasing cloud cover as the day progresses.

While North Jersey preps for a cool autumn day, conditions in the tropics remain far more severe.

Hurricane Melissa, a slow-moving but powerful storm, is currently packing winds of 175 mph and has already caused at least six deaths.

Forecasters warn that Jamaica could face catastrophic damage, with rainfall totals reaching as much as 40 inches.

Closer to home, New Jersey’s impacts will be limited to rough surf along the Jersey Shore.
