Laval police are crediting a publicity campaign launched last month and warning the public of a wave of “distraction” thefts with the arrests last week of two suspects.
The theft sees victims — usually older adults — approached in a shopping mall parking lot by thieves who either ask for directions or want a recommendation for a restaurant. As the conversation progresses, the thieves offer their victim a “gift” in the form of fake jewelry and, while placing it on the victim, steal whatever real jewelry the victim was wearing.
Nicolai Galatan Oinescu and Isaura Alesandru, both 29, are alleged by police to be repeat offenders who have stolen from victims in several other provinces.
They were arrested Oct. 21, when a citizen called police after witnessing the suspects allegedly steal jewel
