Monkeys are on the loose in Mississippi after a vehicle accident and officials are warning people to stay away from them, according to social media posts by the Jasper County Sheriff's Department.
Officials said a wreck happened on Interstate 59 near mile marker 117 north of Heidelberg and a truck carrying Rhesus monkeys from Tulane University overturned. Several of the monkeys are on the loose and the department warns they are dangerous.
"The monkeys are approximately 40lbs, they are aggressive to humans and they require PPE to handle," one of the posts states. "The monkeys carry hepatitis C, herpes, and COVID.
"Tulane University has been notified and will send a team to pick up the monkeys tomorrow. They advised if the monkeys leave the wreck site they need to be shot."
