JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — The Salvation Army of Johnson City hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday to celebrate the opening of its new Veterans Wing Shelter.
A release from The Salvation Army said the brand-new Veterans Wing Shelter at the Center of Hope, 200 Ashe Street, has 15 rooms and was funded by a grant from the Veterans Administration, as well as Washington County, the City of Johnson City, and private donors.
The shelter will serve U.S. military veterans experiencing homelessness, the release said.
"According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, more than 35,000 veterans nationwide experience homelessness on any given night, underscoring the urgent need for targeted, compassionate housing programs like this one," the release states.
