CARROLLTON, Ala. —

When you visit the small town of Carrollton, you may get the feeling you're being watched. Some say that's because you are.

"You see it clearly, it's a smudged face," Craig Patterson said. "It looks like somebody had their face smashed up against the window."

Patterson is the mayor of the neighboring town of Gordo and also the president of the Pickens County Courthouse Foundation. He says the story behind the face starts nearly 150 years ago.

"Two guys broke in and when they broke in they couldn't get in the safe upstairs so angrily, they wadded up paper on different tables and put candles there, lit them and left."

The fire would burn the courthouse down- destroying it and everything inside for a second time in just a matter of decades.
