The Spenard Recreation Center in Anchorage is taking on a new role while continuing to serve the community.

The American Red Cross of Alaska opened a temporary shelter at the Spenard Rec Center on Wednesday to support evacuees from Western Alaska. The move comes after shelter operations ended at the Egan Center.

State officials say the Spenard site is a “pass-through” location — a place where storm survivors can receive assistance as they transition from emergency shelters into hotels or other housing. The shelter operates daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
