ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - A north St. Louis urban farm is collecting thousands of pounds of discarded pumpkins this Halloween season and turning them into compost instead of letting them go to landfills.

New Earth Farm owners John and Stacey Cline collect food waste throughout the year and convert it into compost for gardens. This time of year, they see approximately 3,500 pounds of pumpkins.

“Pumpkins are heavy, you know? They’re 20, 25 pounds a piece, so they add up really quickly,” John Cline said.

The farm recently collected pumpkin remains from the City Museum’s Pumpkin Throw Down event, where visitors drop pumpkins from the 10th floor to the parking lot below.

After the pumpkins splatter on the pavement, the Clines collect the remains for composting.
