Newburgh Free Academy (NFA) had the lead late in Wednesday night’s opening-round Class AAA state boys’ soccer game against John Jay-East Fishkill.
However, John Jay desperately wanted the momentum and to tie the showdown, pushing most of its team up the field to crash the Goldbacks’ goal. And the pressure was getting to Newburgh.
At least, until Piero Altamirano put one in the back of the net with about 4:00 remaining on an assist from Chase Marshall, sealing a 4-2 win for the Goldbacks at Roosevelt High School in Hyde Park.
Newburgh (14-3-1) moves on to play Shenendehowa or Baldwinsville in the Class AAA state quarterfinals on Saturday at a time and location to be determined. Shenendehowa and Baldwinsville were playing on Wednesday night.
