BILLINGS, Mont. – The Billings mayoral race has narrowed down to two main contenders, Mike Nelson and Jennifer Owen, with only 185 votes separating them.

Dana Cosby, elections administrator for Yellowstone County, explained the possibility of a recount.

"The margin between candidates is under a quarter of 1%. If that margin is a quarter of 1% to half of 1%, then that recount could be requested by the candidates and the candidates would have to pay for that recount," said Cosby.

Despite all submitted ballots being counted, there remains the issue of rejected ballots.

The election saw one of the highest percentages of rejected ballots, totaling 1,400. Cosby noted that 706 rejected ballots remained as of 8 p.m. last night, with 80% due to missing birth year information on envelopes.
