HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (WETM)--- Dementia affects more people than many realize, with one in ten adults over the age of 65 living with the medical condition.

A conference was held in Horseheads, where speakers and volunteers came together to share stories and raise awareness about what it is like to live with dementia.

Cynthia Huling Hummel, who was diagnosed with dementia after years of symptoms, says the process of getting an answer wasn't easy.

"I was 49 years old when I started experiencing symptoms. I went from doctor to doctor. It took me 8 years to get a diagnosis," said Huling Hummel.

Huling Hummel says there are many stigmas surrounding the condition.
