After more than a decade of planning and dedication, Anchorage residents, artists, and state officials came together to celebrate the unveiling of the Mushing District Arch — a new landmark honoring Alaska’s storied sled dog tradition.
The arch, which will permanently stand between Fourth Avenue and D Street, marks the starting line for the World Championship Sled Dog Race and the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, two of the state’s most iconic winter events.
A 12-Year Effort Becomes Reality
The idea for the arch began 12 years ago, spearheaded by Jim Huettl, who says watching the project come together has been deeply rewarding.
“It’s really fantastic,” Huettl said. “And I’m so pleased with the workmanship.”
