ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. (WJHL) — The Veterans Monument in downtown Elizabethton has been repaired and restored after being damaged by tractor-trailers forced to take an alternate route due to Hurricane Helene's road closures.
According to a news release from the Office of Carter County Mayor Patty Woodby, the cannons that flank the monument have been placed back in their proper spots, and new mounts were built for them.
Hurricane Helene left many routes impassable after its devastating effects, and as a result, several tractor-trailers found themselves driving through downtown Elizabethton and the roundabout where the monument is located.
In February, one of those tractor-trailers struck a cannon and the slab it sat on.
