ALBANY, N.Y. (WROC) — New York Attorney General Letitia James is warning New Yorkers who use SNAP benefits to be aware of stores unlawfully refusing to accept EBT cards.

James’ office says some grocery stores enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) have recently denied customers the ability to pay for food with their remaining benefits: something that is illegal under federal law.

“New Yorkers must be able to use their existing SNAP benefits, or food stamps, at any business that is part of the program,” James said. “Refusing to accept New Yorkers’ remaining SNAP balances puts already vulnerable families in greater danger of going hungry.”
