Highway 407 ETR is warning customers about a “recent surge” in fraudulent texts and websites that are impersonating the toll highway in order to obtain personal and financial information.
The highway operator said the phishing texts often create a false sense of urgency to lead customers into clicking malicious links.
“Fraudulent messages may appear convincing, using 407 ETR branding and language similar to legitimate communications,” the company said in a Friday release .
In an example of a “real scam text” shared by the company, a message warns the recipient it is the “FINAL NOTICE” of an overdue payment. It threatens an administrative fee and restricted access to 407 ETR routes until payments are made.
The website domain in the text does not belong to 407 ETR, the company said
