BEACON FALLS, Conn. — With winter weather moving in, staying warm is top of mind for many homeowners, but experts say it’s just as important to make sure heating systems are safe and properly maintained.

Officials say house fires increase nationwide in late fall and winter, meaning busier nights for first responders like Beacon Falls Fire Marshal Cal Brennan. And contrary to what you may think, the biggest risk isn't the fire keeping you warm.

Brennan said one of the main contributors to winter fires is “improper disposal of ashes either from your pellet stove or wood stove.”

“Anytime we use ashes we want to put them in a metal bucket,” Brennan said.

For those relying on fireplaces as a heat source, officials also recommend having a licensed team clean and inspect chimneys before use.
