An 85-year-old British woman has died at one of Europe's most popular holiday destinations after a tornado ripped through a hotel and campsite.

The pensioner was reportedly camping at a site near the Portuguese city of Albufeira, on the Algarve, when the tornado struck, launching debris into the air.

She was one of dozens of Brits caught in the chaos as the extreme winds destroyed the Parque de campismo de Albufeira camping site and caused significant damage to a nearby hotel, turning over cars and throwing masonry into the air.

Twenty-one people have been initially reported as injured by local media, while another was understood to be missing before being confirmed as the elderly British woman who tragically lost her life. The woman is yet to be named.
