WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) - Two people have been exposed to rabies after trying to help an injured cat.

The Jefferson County Public Health Service said a stray cat tested positive for the virus.

Officials said that a person found an injured cat in the city of Watertown and helped get the animal to a veterinarian.

Weeks later, the cat developed symptoms consistent with rabies infection and was taken back to the vet.

The cat’s health deteriorated, and it was euthanized.

Officials said the two people who were exposed to the cat will undergo preventative rabies treatment.
