Pittsburgh Regional Transit has announced that the Mt. Washington Transit Tunnel, which connects the South Hills to Downtown, will reopen by the end of 2025 after crews spent most of this year replacing its light rail tracks and performing infrastructure upgrades.
The tunnel has been closed since Feb. 23, and its reopening will be several months behind PRT’s original late October estimate.
The delay was because contractors had to readjust a section of the track, PRT spokesperson Edward Phillipps said in a release. The project had a projected cost of $28 million.
PRT will test the tracks before reopening the tunnel.
