Two men were rescued Saturday from a sinking boat offshore of Hanauma Bay, the Honolulu Fire Department reported.

HFD received a 911 call at 4:06 p.m. reporting swimmers in distress and dispatched six units staffed with 19 personnel. The first unit arrived on the scene at 4:27 p.m. to begin a search from the shoreline, according to a news release.

The trouble happened when a 12-foot vessel carrying two men, one in his 50s and the other in his 20s, was swamped by a large wave, causing it to sink. The younger man was able to swim to shore, climb up the cliffside and contact 911 for assistance while the other boater drifted west.

A good Samaritan on a personal watercraft was able to locate the sinking vessel and transferred the boater to HFD’s rescue boat for transport to shore, where care
