A quiet Sunday evening in Rockland County took an unexpected turn after a resident cleaning out a basement discovered what appeared to be an old piece of military equipment, police said.
Officers were called to a Hillcrest home on Sunday, Nov. 23, after the device was found among belongings left behind by a Korean War veteran who once lived at the property, the Ramapo Police Department said.
Unsure whether the munition was still live, officers immediately reached out to the Rockland County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Disposal Unit.
Bomb technicians arrived shortly afterward, used specialized equipment to assess the device, and safely removed it from the home without incident. Police emphasized that the situation was resolved smoothly and that no residents were in danger.
Authorities did not specify the exact type of munition recovered.
