A man strangled his terrified girlfriend so violently he broke one of his own fingers in the struggle. Karl Wexler, 44, told police "get here quick before I kill her", after throttling his partner inside his flat.

The incident happened on January 21 this year, on Dentons Green Lane in St Helens . An earlier hearing at Liverpool Crown Court was told how victim Clare King was able to escape, "running for her life" before seeking refuge at a nearby social club. She called 999 and reported that Wexler had attacked her.
