MCFARLAND, Wis. (WKOW) -- The McFarland Police Department is honoring K9 Officer Ryan Copeland, who was tragically killed in a squad crash 10 years ago on Nov. 23, 2015. Copeland joined the department after serving in the military and became its first K-9 handler.
Copeland and his K-9 partner, Boris, shared a strong bond and were known to be inseparable. On the day of the crash, Copeland was on his way to pick up Boris.
"On the way there, Ryan came to an intersection where a school bus full of children was stopped. Ryan smiled and waved at all the children, and they waved back. We know this because the bus driver reached out to us and told us about the encounter. He found out later that day that it was Ryan who was killed," said McFarland Interim Police Chief Brian Redman.
