“Swatting” — the false reporting of emergencies to provoke armed law enforcement responses — poses serious risks to physical safety and civic participation. The tactic has been increasingly deployed in targeted campaigns against journalists, health care providers, elected officials and, to date, at least seven Indiana state senators.

What makes the recent wave chilling is its apparent coordination. Nearly all of the state lawmakers have either expressed negative opinions or been silent regarding President Donald Trump’s midcycle redistricting push. Even Gov. Mike Braun, who called for a special December session to redistrict, has received “credible threats,” his office said.
