CARBONDALE, Ill. (WSIL) -- The City of Carbondale is advising residents about illegal materials that should not be flushed or poured down drains. These items, prohibited by city code, can cause clogs, especially when entangled with tree roots.
Residents are reminded not to flush wipes, even those labeled as "flushable." "Wipes Clog Pipes," said the city, as these products do not break down like toilet paper and are responsible for clogging sewer systems nationwide, including Carbondale's. Instead, wipes should be disposed of in the trash.
Other items that should never be flushed include cotton products, cat litter, baby wipes, diapers, dental floss, paper towels, and medications. These items do not dissolve properly and can lead to severe clogs.
