GRAND RAPIDS, MI - As immigration detention has swelled, a growing number of people are suing the federal government over a new policy that’s keeping them locked up indefinitely, unable to seek release on bond.

Since July, more than 200 people have filed federal cases in Michigan challenging their detention, many held in a former Northern Michigan prison that became a massive new U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, ICE, facility earlier this year.

That’s a big spike from the two cases, known as habeas corpus petitions, that were brought in Michigan’s federal courts from January to July this year.
