Dozens of residents in two highrises in Thorncliffe Park are unable to return home following a complex five-alarm fire. The fire, which continues to burn within the insulation of the buildings, has resulted in elevated carbon monoxide levels.
As of Friday morning, officials reported that 70 hotel rooms have been secured for the 114 residents who were evacuated. The fire began Thursday afternoon in the parking garage of 11 Thorncliffe Park Drive, possibly originating from an electrical panel or transformer. By evening, the fire had escalated, spreading to the adjacent building at 21 Overlea Boulevard.
Toronto Fire Chief Jim Jessop described the situation as one of the most complex fire incidents the city has faced in a long time. "What we thought would have been a normal fire for us to put out has turned out to be one of the more complex fire situations we have had in a long time in this city," he said. More than 77 fire trucks have been deployed to combat the blaze, which is spreading behind the walls of the buildings.
Jessop emphasized that the firefighting efforts will require a meticulous approach. He noted that fire crews will remain on the scene for at least 24 hours after the fire is fully extinguished, delaying residents' return to their homes.
No injuries have been reported, but power to both buildings was shut down by Toronto Hydro due to damage in an underground vault. Residents from 70 units across seven floors were evacuated due to the hazardous carbon monoxide levels.
Mayor Olivia Chow addressed the situation outside the buildings on Friday morning, stating, "Our priority is safety and security of the residents of Thorncliffe Park. My hearts go out to all the residents that had to leave their homes last night. We’re here for you, and you are not alone."
The situation remains ongoing, and further updates are expected as firefighters continue their efforts to control the blaze.
