WAVELAND, Miss. (WLOX) - A good friend, loving husband, and great neighbor – those are just some of the titles those close to Mayor Mike Smith are remembering him by.

Friends and family members took turns sharing stories and reliving memories during a fire station dedication that made the two-term mayor who he was.

“He put a good example for everyone,” one man said at the podium.

“Mike was my friend. He never lied to me, never,” a woman added.

Mayor Jay Trapani issued a proclamation for Smith’s dedication to the quality of life for all residents.

Smith made a life out of public service. For nearly 40 years, he took on many roles, and his family and friends say that in each of them, he made a lasting impact.
