LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Several house fires across central and eastern Kentucky over Thanksgiving weekend have prompted fire officials to issue winter safety warnings as colder weather approaches.

Fires occurred in Lexington, Somerset and the Morehead area during the holiday period. The causes of these fires have not been determined.

Woodford County Fire Chief Melvin Montgomery said his department sees more house fires during winter months as residents turn to heating sources that can create hazards.

“People are overloading their outlets with heaters, drop cords, extension cords being used that are not rated for what the space heater is required to be used,” Montgomery said. “When you leave the home, especially if you’re using space heaters or something like that, its good to turn those
