A task force formed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer unveiled its recommendations this week to reduce gun violence in the state .

The recommendations from the Michigan Gun Violence Prevention Task Force range from raising the minimum age to purchase firearms and banning “assault weapons” to building on existing gun control and safety laws.

The task force was created in June 2024 by Whitmer . It followed new gun safety and control laws enacted earlier that year in the wake of the mass shooting at Michigan State University that killed three students and injured five others.
